Your second line, with Greg digging his toes into the sand (I think I like 'between' or at least 'under' better than 'underneath') reminds me of this. (I suppose digging isn't really the same as squeezing.) Salinger's line is just one of those that stays with me, and now I can't think of sand without thinking of it. Such a gorgeous, telling detail, even if I can't tell quite what it's telling. Also a fine example of the aptly picked adjective.
